When the British declared war on the Germans, they had no idea what they were getting themselves into. The German army was, in one word, devastating. British soliders had little experience on the battlefield; all of their training was for trench warfare on land. On top of that, Britain wasn't really prepared for naval warfare either. They were limited to shelling Germany from miles away and trying to drown them in rivers with chemical weapons. There's no question that World War One was brutal for both countries but one might be curious about how it started in earnest? Well here are all you need to know about how the world war 1 began. The attacks on Belgians To understand the German invasion of Belgium, we need to know about the German-Belgian relationship. After World War I, Germany and Belgium were very close and had a special alliance. Germany was supposed to protect Belgium's neutrality and they both even had a mutual defense pact. This is important because it explains why Germany invaded in the first place, as they thought it was just carrying out its treaty with Belgium. The huge reason why they thought this is because of how Germany previously lived through what was known as the "War Guilt Clause". It essentially said that if Germany started any conflict after World War I, it would have to pay all reparations for war damages. But when this was put into an established treaty, the French did their best to make it as harsh for Germany as possible. The harshness of the treaty caused Germany to believe that there was no way it could pay off their war debt unless something could be done, and fast. On top of that, there were specific reasons why Belgium was being invaded in the first place. On August 4th, 1914 Germany began its invasion of Belgium by sending military forces into Brussels under the pretext of protecting its national security. As an excuse for invading Belgium, Germany claimed that it had received information from a spy named Van der Elst in the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This information allegedly warned that Germany was preparing to make an attack on Belgium. This incident is important to explain why Germany invaded Belgium because it's the first time they did so. The Belgian invasion was just the beginning of the War, though, as soon as Germany entered Belgium, their forces were met with random resistance from Belgian soldiers. Soon after this, there were many reports that German troops were being captured by Belgian soldiers and being executed. However this wasn't true despite what everyone thought. Actually German soldiers had no reason to worry about this because it was all staged by French intelligence to create tension between Germany and Britain for them to fight each other instead of Germany. The Invasion of France As soon as Belgium was invaded, the Germans began to invade France right away. In fact it wasn't long before they started moving towards Paris. In this case the reason Germany didn't just take Paris without a fight was because of a very important treaty that Belgium had made with France itself. The reason why Germany was invading in the first place is because it thought that they would be able to invade France in a peaceful manner and get away with it. During its invasion of Belgium, Germany sent a telegram to Britain saying "I have committed myself in advance not to do anything in Belgium which will not be in accordance with the general interests of both countries.
